WHO WE ARE

ABOUT

The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty brings together businesses from across the plastics value chain, financial institutions, and key non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in support of an ambitious, effective and legally binding UN treaty to end plastic pollution.

The development of this treaty is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the plastic pollution crisis in a globally coordinated way. The resolution adopted at the UN Environmental Assembly in March 2022 marked the start of the intergovernmental negotiation process

The Coalition was launched in September 2022 with more than 80 organisations already aligned on a shared vision. Today, over 300 organisations have endorsed it. We see the treaty as the key policy mechanism to accelerate progress in three critical areas: reducing plastic production and use through a circular economy approach, increasing the circulation of all necessary plastics, and preventing and remediating hard-to-abate micro- and macro-plastic leakage into the environment.

The Coalition develops ambitious policy recommendations aligned with this vision, engages directly with treaty negotiators, and builds confidence across the business community in the benefits  and the necessity of an effective treaty that sets common goals, rules and obligations to be implemented in national jurisdictions. For businesses and investors, that means a level playing field and the prevention of a patchwork of disconnected national rules.

STRUCTURE OF THE COALITION

Within the Coalition, we have created three different levels for organisations to engage with us. All of them have endorsed the Coalition’s Vision Statement:

  1. Supporters: Have access to insights and materials developed by the Coalition. Support advocacy and communications plans through their own channels.
  2. Members: Guide the development of policy recommendations through online questionnaires. Actively support advocacy and communications plans.
  3. Policy Working Group: Co-create policy recommendations and advocacy plans, co-chaired by business members alongside the Coalition’s Secretariat.
